Susan Rice was Pat Quigley's cousin. I always found it interesting that they looked nothing alike and yet were cousins. So sad to hear she is gone. May she rest in peace.
I knew Susan Rice very well, were close friends in the later years of Piedmont High and had many good times together.
After graduation, we both decided to go to San Francisco Junior College. I do remember the trips quite vividly going to and from school across the Bay Bridge to San Francisco. We had met up with a guy who was going every day, also, so we carpooled with him in an Austin car - all three of us cramped in that little sports car and always with the top down, even in winter.
We were in school only about a week, when Susan and I were having lunch in the cafeteria. Along came two nice-looking guys who promptly sat down beside us. Susan was talking with one of them, Doug Puitt and I was talking with Bob Hardenbrook. Well, before the lunch time was over, Bob Hardenbrook leaned over and asked Susan out for a date. Ouch! Well, she said Doug had already asked her out, so Bob said, "Let's make it a foursome!"
Long story short. we both ended up marrying those two guys!
Sue and I were very good buds in high school. I remember spending alot of time at her house listening to music, talking (yes, talking) and just hanging out. During the summer between our junior and senior year I learned to play the guitar a little. When I got back in town I told Sue and she promptly got an electric guitar and amplifier. Well, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. For a time I spent every waking moment over there, the two of us jamming on her guitar and driving everyone else in her house nuts. God, the things you remember. I hope Sue turned out to be a better guitar player than I did. RIP Suzy Q... your buddy, Al.
Like Al Forster, I really enjoyed hanging out in 8th or 9th grade with Susan, Al, Pattie, Jack Sanford and ??? At Susan's or Pattie's house after school. As a piedmont newcomer, I got connected by these new and good friends, particularly so very friendly Susan!
Susan lived across the street when I first moved to Piedmont.Karen Kessler lived right next door.I miss Karen. She invited me to walk everyday to school and have lunch with her group when I was new. What a sweetheart! Susan was definitely fun! She invited me and others over often after school to watch the Dick Clark show. We had fun watching the kids back east dancing to popular music. Fun. I missed Karen and Susan when my family moved to Scenic Ave but Mom loved the view.Then I met Bette Beechen and we started walking to the football games.Just more fun memories.
